WeChat and WhatsApp chat translation for Australian and New Zealand partner visas
Couples applying for a partner visa often submit hundreds of pages of WeChat screenshots as evidence of an ongoing relationship. We translate every bubble in place on the original screenshot — quoted replies, voice-message markers, timestamps, red packets and transfers included — so a case officer can read the English version exactly as the conversation appeared. The same in-place translation works for WhatsApp, QQ, SMS / iMessage, LINE and Telegram screenshots, as long as the conversation is in Chinese or Japanese.
Australia & New Zealand requirements: Australian Home Affairs requires translations made in Australia to be done by a NAATI-accredited translator; translations made outside Australia do not need NAATI, but must state the translator's full name, address, telephone number and qualifications and experience in the language (Home Affairs: Check twice, submit once (translations)). Immigration New Zealand requires no specific accreditation, but the translation must be confirmed accurate and signed or stamped by the translator or translation company (Immigration New Zealand: Providing English translations of supporting documents). Our translations are made in China and every declaration includes those translator details. If the receiving party specifically asks for NAATI, use a NAATI translator instead.
Original vs. translation (anonymized sample)
Common problems with translated chat evidence
Speakers lost when chats are retyped into a table
A plain two-column transcript drops who said what, the bubble order and the screenshot boundaries. Translating in place on each screenshot keeps the left/right speaker layout, so the officer can match every line to the original page.
Quoted replies, voice messages and system notices skipped
Quoted messages, "[Voice message 14″]" markers, recalled-message notices, red packets and transfer cards are part of the record. Leaving them untranslated makes the evidence look edited.
Dates and nicknames translated inconsistently across volumes
Large chat histories are delivered in volumes (for example 50 pages each). The same contact nickname, place name and date format must read identically across every volume, which we enforce with a per-case glossary.
Translator details missing from the declaration
For translations made outside Australia, a declaration without the translator's full name, address, phone number and qualifications does not meet the Home Affairs requirement — ours always includes them.
FAQ
Do WeChat screenshots for an Australian partner visa need to be translated?
Any document not in English that you submit to Home Affairs must be accompanied by an accurate English translation. Chat screenshots submitted as relationship evidence are no exception.
Can you translate WhatsApp, QQ or SMS chats as well as WeChat?
Yes. We translate the text on the screenshot in place, so the chat app does not matter — WhatsApp, QQ, SMS / iMessage, LINE and Telegram all work, provided the conversation is in Chinese or Japanese. Records from different apps can go in the same order, and pages already in English are removed from the quote.
Does the translation have to be done by a NAATI translator?
Only if it is translated in Australia. A translation made outside Australia is accepted without NAATI when it includes the translator's full name, address, phone number and qualifications and experience. Our translators work in China and every declaration lists those details.
How is a long chat history priced?
Upload the screenshots or a PDF export and the system counts the text and gives an itemized quote before you pay. Pages with only photos or stickers cost very little; you only pay for the text that is actually translated.
Can you handle several hundred pages?
Yes. For an Australian immigration law firm, one applicant's file alone included 388 pages of WeChat history plus media screenshots and money-transfer records, delivered in numbered 50-page volumes; another ran to 131 pages and came with a project quality report.
