It is the only provincial-level comprehensive cultural and artistic newspaper in Northwest China with high authority and influence. The masthead was inscribed by Fang Yi, former Vice Premier of the State Council and Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Domestic unified serial number: CN61-0032; Postal subscription code: 51-20. Since 2020, it has been published every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Culture and Art Weekly originated from Shaanxi Culture Newspaper, which was first published in January 1958 and hosted by the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Culture. In January 1985, it was renamed Culture Weekly, hosted by the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture and Cultural Relics. In 1988, it was renamed Culture and Art Weekly, hosted by the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture. At the end of 2000, the supervising and hosting unit was transferred from the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture to Shaanxi People’s Publishing House. Historical Development On January 1, 1958, Shaanxi Culture Newspaper (weekly), hosted by the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Culture, was founded in Xi’an, with 4 pages in 4-page format. Edited and published by the Provincial Bureau of Culture, printed by the Provincial Printing Factory, and distributed by the Provincial Post Office. Editorial board members included Director Yu Xun, Deputy Director Wu Bolun, and members Dong Xibin, Lin Liming, Chen Shibin. Wu Bolun served as editor-in-chief, Gu Gang as deputy editor-in-chief. Due to funding constraints, the newspaper was changed to the monthly Shaanxi Culture on December 5 of the same year. On January 16, 1985, Shaanxi Culture was changed to Culture Weekly, 4 pages in 4-page format, hosted by the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture and Cultural Relics. Editor-in-chief: Zhang Yonghui. In 1987, Party Secretary Dang Ronghua of the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture concurrently served as editor-in-chief, with Sun Baoyin as executive deputy editor-in-chief. That year, the National Press and Publication Administration registered newspapers nationwide. Since Shaanxi’s Culture Weekly had the same name as Anhui’s Culture Weekly and was registered later, it was renamed Culture and Art Weekly on January 16, 1988 (some sources say January 6), remaining a 4-page weekly. Honors During its early days as Shaanxi Culture Newspaper, the paper strongly promoted the CCP’s “Double Hundred” policy and cultural policies. Notably, Shaanxi’s three major Qin opera troupes were invited by Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai to perform at Zhongnanhai, with the newspaper giving timely and effective coverage, promoting the development of Qin opera.
