Its predecessors were SRS Information Technology Co., Ltd. and Sinanet Information Company. On December 1, 1998, the two companies announced their merger, establishing Sina.com and launching the Chinese-language website of the same name. SRS Information Technology Co., Ltd., located in Zhongguancun, Beijing, is a Sino-foreign joint venture specializing in the development, sales, and service of Chinese-language software products. It was jointly founded in December 1993 by Stone Group Corporation, then the largest privately owned high-tech enterprise in China, Mr. WANG Zhidong, inventor of China's first practical Chinese Windows environment, and Mr. YAN Yuanchao, inventor of CCDOS. In September 1997, SRS successfully introduced new investment from three international high-tech venture capital firms, including Walden, thereby successfully undertaking international transformation and becoming the first software enterprise in China to introduce both a venture capital mechanism and the “Silicon Valley” management model. SRS's representative product is the Chinese platform software series “RichWin,” whose first version was launched in March 1994. The product is applicable to various operating platforms including Windows 95/98/NT, can simultaneously process nearly 20 Chinese internal code systems, fully supports Internet applications, and is fully compatible with Microsoft's Chinese-language products. It remains one of the most popular Chinese platform software products and has been installed by nearly 5 million users worldwide. In April 1996, SRS launched the Chinese-language website SRSNet (http://www.srsnet.com), providing information services such as Chinese-language search, news, forums, and chat rooms, and it quickly became one of the most popular Chinese-language websites. Sinanet Information Company was founded in Silicon Valley, United States, in April 1995 by three Chinese graduate students from Stanford University, with Mr. JIANG Fengnian, former President of Trend Micro and now Chairman of Sina.com, serving as General Manager. Its “Sinanet” website provided a variety of Chinese-language information services focused primarily on lifestyle information and was warmly received by overseas Chinese communities. Prior to its merger with SRS, SinaNet had already become the largest Chinese-language website overseas. In August 1996, Sinanet established its Taipei branch, launched SinaNet Taipei in November 1998, and in December became the Taipei division of Sina.com. Benefiting from the strong complementarity between SRS and Sinanet, Sina.com achieved tremendous success within only half a year of its formal establishment. Mr. MAO Daolin, former Vice President of Walden International Investment Group, and others joined the company in succession, further strengthening its senior management team. In March 1999, Sina.com received new investment from internationally renowned investors, further enhancing its strength. On April 12, its website redesign, aimed at a unified image, unified services, and integrated resources, was completed. Sina.com is currently the world's largest Chinese-language website. Beijing Sina.com The predecessor of today's Beijing Sina.com was SRS Online (http://www.srsnet.com), the Chinese-language website of SRS, which was launched in April 1996. It was an important product of SRS and also one of the earliest large-scale Chinese-language websites on the Internet. It brought together dozens of major Chinese-language forums and chat rooms, as well as a series of Chinese-language resources and services highly favored by Internet users, including current affairs news, sports, games, lifestyle and fashion, a Chinese-language search engine, weather forecasts, television program listings, and practical online tools. During the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the themed website “Storm of the 1998 World Cup in France” achieved tremendous success and set the highest traffic record among Chinese-language websites during the same period. On December 1, 1998, “SRS Online” was renamed upon the launch of Sina.com. In April 1999, Beijing Sina.com successfully completed its redesign. Following the redesign, Beijing Sina.com featured multiple sections, including News Center, Search Engine, Finance, Online Communication, Living Space, Sports Storm, Game World, and Technology Times. Sina.com's partners include such prominent media organizations as Xinhua News Agency, Agence France-Presse, China Central Television, Beijing Television, Beijing People's Broadcasting Station, Shanghai People's Broadcasting Station, Phoenix Chinese Channel, China Tourism News, Beijing Youth Daily, Beijing Morning Post, Wenhui Daily, Southern Weekend, Boutique Shopping Guide, Sanlian Life Weekly, Huasheng Monthly, Titan Sports, Football, Internet Weekly, and China Computer News.
